Every Friday, just after coop clean-out, I throw together a little herbal offering for the hens, a kind of rustic confetti that smells like an old-world apothecary met a midsummer meadow. It’s practical, but also a little bit magical. These “herb bombs” don’t explode (thankfully), but they do release calming scents, deter pests, and bring a pop of colour to the coop.
Ingredients
- Lavender – soothing and mite-repelling
- Mint – cooling and fresh; deters pests and delights hens
- Thyme – antimicrobial and aromatic
- Oregano – antifungal and antibacterial
- Rosemary – effective against creepy crawlies
- Lemon balm – calming for both hens and humans
- Sage – earthy, cleansing, and pest-repelling
- Calendula petals – healing, gentle, and bright as sunshine
Gather a few sprigs of each and tie into a bundle until you're ready to use.
How to Use Your Herb Bomb
- Tear apart the bundle with your hands — this isn’t a bouquet, it’s a blessing.
- Scatter generously in all the right places:
Beneath nesting box bedding
Into the corners of the coop floor
Along perch bars or anywhere your hens roost
Seasonal Tips
- Using fresh herbs? Make sure the coop is well-ventilated so they don’t turn to mush.
- Damp weather? Skip the scatter, hang the herbs instead. Bundles tied with twine will last longer and still do their job.
